Harke Completes Europe/Russia Tour

"It was a spectacular photo-safari!" Those were the words of Jerry Harke, president and owner of JR Harke Photography, Inc. and Marigot Publishing House, Inc., describing his recent tour (June-July, 2010) of Germany, Austria and Russia. "My wife, Kathleen, joined my shooting schedule on this trip and served as my production photographer taking photos of me working with the various models." "We began our odyssey in Munich, Germany with a tour of Neuschwanstein Castle and captured some very beautiful landscapes.

From Germany we moved on into Austria starting near Switzerland at Bregenz and then moving eastward to Haiming, Innsbruck and on to Vienna.

I had the very delightful experience of working with Emily Rose Mawson from England, who is presently living in Innsbruck, Austria

In Haiming, Austria, which is a small village in Tirol, I photographed Julia Petrova, who comes from the Ukraine and now resides with her husband in Austria. Julia Petrova has opened a new art gallery in Haiming and, I am happy to say, three of my photographs are on exhibit there now."

"Our final stop in Austria, before moving on to Russia, was in Wels where I photographed the very petite and lovely Jeannie Kayla. Jeannie is from Indonesia and now resides in Austria with her husband. The shoot with Jeannie was quite special not only because of her outstanding modeling abilities and trim artistically pleasing figure, but the shoot was done, at her suggestion, at the ruins of the Schaunburg Castle outside of Salzburg, Austria. Hannes, Jeanie's husband served as my assistant casting light on Jeannie using a large reflector. We enjoyed our time with Jeannie and Hannes and later, at a beautiful restaurant with a terrace overlooking the Danube River, they taught us the joys of a local drink known as Most. The nectar, which is a light and very pleasing cider drink, was most welcome. Being quite thirsty after a photo shoot in the hot sun at the Schuanburg Castle, it was far too easy to over-indulge and the mild alcohol content brought about a mellow glow and many laughs with our new friends."

"In Moscow, we were met at Domodedevo International Airport by our dear friend and lovely model, Veronika Davydova. My wife and I developed a strong and very pleasing friendship with both Veronika and Elena Scherbakova, at an earlier time when they resided near us in the United States. When they returned to Russia, we promised to visit them there and this trip was the result.

At a photo studio in Moscow, I worked with Russian models Marina Yusova and Evgenia Kaveeva and, of course, our lovely friend, Veronika. No trip to Moscow is complete without visiting Red Square and we made that sojourn on a beautiful day with Veronika.

"From Moscow, we flew to Saint Petersburg to visit with Elena and Veronika joined us. There we toured the Hermitage Museum and also took a hydrofoil trip to see Peterhof, Peter the Great's summer home. Both visits resulted in many memorable photos."

What's next for Harke? "The trip to Germany, Austria and Russia completed my photo shoots for the book titled Beauty Revealed, which will be published before the end of 2010. Beauty Revealed follows on the heels of Nu Art en Noir et Blanc, which was a compendium of black and white nude figure art shot in both studio and outdoor locations. I wanted to swing the pendulum in the opposite direction for Beauty Revealed and captured photos of models, again in studio and outdoor locations, but this time in lush surroundings and beautiful colors. I am anxious to see the results of my work for Beauty Revealed."

Harke's Art On Exhibit in Austria

(WASHINGTON, D.C. - May 6, 2010) Jerry Harke, owner of JR Harke Photography, Inc. and Marigot Publishing House, Inc., announced today that three of his classic fine art prints on canvas will be placed on exhibit at the Julia Petrova Art Gallery in Tirol, Austria beginning May 20. "I'm especially happy to have my art on display in the heart of Europe where thousands of people from around the world will have the opportunity to see it and I thank Julia Petrova for making this possible," Harke said.

Julia Petrova, owner of the gallery located in Haiming, Austria said, "This is truly a landmark opportunity for any gallery owner and curator to offer international art from some of the best artists in the world. Jerry Harke's photography is stunning and the images he will be exhibiting in my gallery were created in the style of oil paintings on stretched canvas. He has worked with numerous models from around the world in locations that offer the very best in backdrops.

The three photos he will be showing are titled, Edwardian Lawn Dress, Mountain Top and The Falls. Each is a signature presentation from Harke's collection and has appeared in books he has published showcasing his work. His art is most welcome in my new gallery and will be on exhibit for a full year. Of course, each piece will be offered for sale and I expect I will be asking Jerry to provide additional images soon. These will surely be sold quickly."

Jerry Harke is a professional photographer and writer and resides in Annandale, Virginia, a suburb of Washington, D.C. He travels frequently conducting research and stockpiling ideas for future works of fiction as well as capturing images for his photography books. His first published book of photography was called The Edwadian Lawn Dress: Gentle and Timeless. The second book of photography, In Sappho's Secret Garden: A Thesaurus of Love, explored the beauty of Sapphic love and was based upon the ancient Greek lyrist Sappho, who Plato named the tenth muse. Harke's third and most recently published book presents 408 pages of classic black and white nude figure art and is titled Nu Art en Noir et Blanc. It also contains a guest-photographer section highlighting the work of Harke's friend and mentor, French photographer, Jean Vallette.

Two more photographic books are forthcoming. The first, Real Redheads au Naturel ... at Home! is set for release in late 2010, and following that, Beauty Revealed is scheduled for release in early 2011. Midwest Photo Tour for New Book Complete

Jerry Harke has recently completed three tours of the midwest taking photos of models. Their pictorials will appear in his next book due out in 2011. The new book will be called Beauty Revealed.

"I don't often get to the midwestern states," Harke said. "That's why I was especially pleased that family business took me on four trips there during 2009 and early 2010.

"I had the good fortune to work with ten models from Edmond, Stillwater, Norman and Lawton, Oklahoma, Elkhart, Kansas, Amarillo, Dallas and Houston, Texas, and Santa Fe, New Mexico."

Explaining that Beauty Revealed will show models clothed, partially clothed and nude, Harke said, "It's my intent with this book to show the female form in all its beauty whether that be with clothes or not."

Harke added, "The book will include a few pictorials in which females are shown in passionate exchanges with one another.

"I dedicated an entire book to sapphic love a few years ago. It was called In Sappho's Secret Garden. But frankly, I find images of beautiful women engaged sensually with one another twice as beautiful and, after all, this book is called Beauty Revealed, so why not?"

"It's no secret that I regard the female form as one of the most beautiful sights the eye can behold.

"In a previous book titled Nu Art en Noir et Blanc, I presented the female form in black and white in both studio and outdoor locations. Beauty Revealed can be considered an extension of that effort, but with the glory of beautiful color seen everywhere!

When asked what other locations will be appear in the forthcoming book, Harke said, "I plan to photograph models soon in and around Seattle, Washington. After that, I will be working with models in Germany, Austria and Russia. When that tour is finished, the creation of the book will begin!"

'Censored' Art Show in Multiple Local Galleries Includes Art from JR Harke Photography, Inc.

(WASHINGTON, D.C. – March 6, 2010) JR Harke Photography, Inc., is participating with other fine art photographers from the Washington, D.C. area in a special exhibit called “Censored.” The exhibit opened Saturday evening, March 13, at three galleries including the artDC Gallery located at 5710 Baltimore Avenue in Hyattsville, Maryland, the Cheryl Edwards studio located at 4103-4105 Rhode Island Avenue, Brentwood, Maryland, and the Design Studio Art Gallery

located at 5702 Baltimore Avenue, Hyattsville, Maryland.

The show’s curator, Renee ‘Azcra’ Woodward said, “Eroticism has been an important part of art throughout history and has made a significant impact on many major European art movements. Here in the United States, erotic art has often been considered taboo resulting in censored exhibits. But thanks to MOCA DC in Washington and the annual Erotic Arts Festival in Seattle, we have good reason to celebrate the breakdown of traditional barriers in this country.

“Our intention is to poke fun at the long-running practice of moral and social censorship of art by covering any visible genitalia in each work of art with ‘post-it’ notes. Of course, we will encourage visitors to take a sneak peek at what’s going on underneath the notes.”

Commenting on the exhibit, Harke said, "Thanks to the work of Dave Quammen at MOCA DC Art Gallery in Georgetown, the month of March has come to be known for the presentation of erotic art in Washington, D.C. With several other galleries joining forces, I'm hopeful that one day we will be able to hold an erotic arts festival on the level of the Seattle Erotic Arts Festival. As a corporate sponsor of that event, I'll be joining Renee 'Azcra' Woodward, in Seattle this year. Her work will be on exhibit there and I will be looking to develop a strong and productive relationship with the SEAF staff.

JR Harke Photography, Inc. Sponsoring Annual Art Events in Two Major U.S. Cities

JR Harke Photography, Inc., is sponsoring the annual MOCA DC Erotic Arts Show to be held March 5 through April 3 at 1054 31^st St., NW, Washington, D.C. Also the company is sponsoring the annual Seattle Erotic Arts Festival at the Seattle Exhibition Center by the famed Space Needle beginning April 30 and running through May 2.

“I think both of these events are wonderful opportunities for artists to express themselves in ways that too often they cannot do in other shows,” Jerry Harke, owner of JR Harke Photography, Inc., said. “It is unfortunate that in so many places and over thousands of years, art of an erotic nature has been, and continues to be, suppressed around the world. I am encouraged, however, to know that we have pioneers in this country who are working to change that.”

Harke, whose work includes all types of fine art and who serves clients throughout the Washington, D.C. region, is a frequent exhibitor of his art at MOCA DC. This year, as a corporate sponsor of that group’s event, Harke is bringing in a special talent recognized nationwide to kick off the opening reception show. Kitty Victorian, based in Chicago, will open the evening at 7:30 p.m. at MOCA DC (www.mocadc.org) on March 5 with a short performance and then will emcee an amateur burlesque contest. Ladies from throughout the region are encouraged to participate. Prize money for the winners is $100 for first place, $50 for second place, and $25 for third place.

The 2010 show at MOCA DC promises to be one of the biggest opening nights yet,” Harke said. “Last year there were approximately 300 people in attendance and even more are expected this year. It is important to note that the doors open at 6 p.m. and the public is welcome to come in and see all of the art that’s on display. Admission to the gallery and the burlesque show is free. However, being a burlesque show, attendance is reserved to an adult audience.”

Harke is a frequent traveler and photographs models around the world. Not only has he frequented the Seattle area to take photographs of local talent, but he also was a one-time resident there. “Seattle holds a special place in my heart and I am a great admirer of people like photographer Jim Duvall who first came up with the idea for the Seattle Erotic Arts Festival (www.seattleerotic.org).”

Jim Duvall, Allena Gabosch, executive director of the Center and Foundation for a Sex Positive Culture and Anna Hurwitz, festival director, organized a committee in the late 1990s to explore the idea of an erotic arts festival. The first one was held in 2002 and, since then, the event has grown into an internationally recognized festival with thousands in attendance. “It is my hope that the Washington, D.C. region might someday hold an erotic arts festival with participation from numerous galleries and various interest groups as well as attendance from around the world. I think with Dave Quammen leading the way at MOCA DC, we have a good chance of getting there,” Harke added.

Kitty Victorian Headlines Annual MOCADC Erotic Art Show and Amateur Burlesque Contest

Kitty Victorian, the quintessence of Burlesque, will perform at the opening of the annual MOCA DC Erotic Art Show in Georgetown on March 5. Miss Kitty will emcee an amateur burlesque contest and will open the show with a performance of her own featuring extravagant costumes draped in rhinestones and feathers and wrapped in sultry boas.

The annual erotic art show at MOCA DC has become one of DC’s top crowd-pleasing shows with over 300 in attendance at last year’s reception. Erotic art from artists throughout the region will be on display throughout the month. The March 5, 2010 reception promises to break all records.

MOCA DC’s executive director, Dave Quammen said, “All ladies from throughout the Washington, DC region are welcome to fashion their best erotic costume and come on down to shake their stuff for our crowd. By crowd response, we’ll be selecting the top three performances of the evening with three cash awards of $100 for first place, $50 for second place and $25 for third place. But regardless, win or lose, everyone will be a winner! It will be an evening with the best entertainment in town. After the amateur burlesque show, the ladies are welcome to serve as human-canvases for our body painters.

The Washington Post has called Kitty Victorian a “burlesque dancer extraordinaire bringing the saucy, seductive world of burlesque dancing to D.C., one bump and grind at a time.” Now headquartered in Chicago, Miss Kitty returns to Washington, D.C. regularly. Starting in 2004, she single-handedly ignited burlesque in D.C. and marked the beginning of Miss Kitty Victorian’s monthly burlesque revue and DC Gurly Show. Since then, she has appeared in numerous cities across the nation performing her special brand of sophisticated and erotic burlesque.

"In Your Face" Art Featured at MOCA DC's February Show

JR Harke Photography, Inc. is showing seven pieces of art at the MOCA DC Art Gallery in Georgetown during the month of February, 2010.

The theme of the show is “In Your Face Art.” Commenting on his work in the show, Jerry Harke, owner of JR Harke Photography, Inc. and Marigot Publishing House, Inc., said, “The theme of the show calls for an abstract approach to presenting art. Some of the pieces I'm showing are from a photo shoot I did in Los Angeles with model Meghan Monroe. Others were recreations of special moments from the Crazy Horse Review at Las Vegas. All of the images have been presented as pop art with some wild and crazy lines and colors. The net effect is that attention is achieved with bright colors and odd perspectives causing the viewer to become interested and remain engaged.”

Dave Quammen, Executive Director at MOCA DC said, “This exhibit is wide open to the artist's interpretation. We encourage an abstract approach and many of the pieces on exhibit follow that idea. I was particularly interested to see how Jerry Harke would approach the concept because his art is most often based in realism. JR Harke Photography Exhibiting at January 2010 Fairfax Art League Show

The January 2010 show at the Fairfax Art League's Village Plaza Gallery in Fairfax, Virginia includes figure work presented by Jerry Harke, an internationally acclaimed photographer from Northern Virginia. "This month's theme at the gallery focuses on figure art. But attendees expecting to see nude figure art may be surprised. the figure art theme, oddly enough, has to do with the more unexpected uses of that word," Harke said. "Nevertheless, I make excellent use of the beautiful figures presented by five lovely models I've had the honor to work with in recent years.

Harke’s work is widely varied in the five images on display starting January 8 at the league’s Village Plaza Gallery in Fairfax, Virginia.

The first image, called Edwardian Lawn Dress is from the cover of a book published in 2007 by the same name. Another image titled In Dreams features Northern Virginia model, Renee Woodward. The photograph was shot on the Caribbean island of St. Martin.

Another image from St. Martin also on display at the gallery is titled The Dancer and features New York model Rashika Pickett. The fifth and final image is called Palo Duro Canyon and features New Mexico model Stephanie Landers. "That image," Harke says, "was shot in the Palo Duro Canyon where Stephanie Landers was performing in the outdoor musical, TEXAS!"

Harke says, "I especially enjoy showing my art at the Village Plaza Gallery in Fairfax, Virginia. The league is comprised of a wonderful group of artists who have extended a warm welcome and the patrons who visit the gallery have been very complimentary."

New Photos from JR Harke Photography at MOCA DC's Holliday Gift Show

Dave Quammen, MOCA DC's executive director said, "We'll celebrate the opening of this special show during a reception starting at 6 pm on Dec. 11. The exhibit is open to the public."

Harke Delivers Fast-Paced Suspense Thriller: EPISODES

Episodes, a new suspense thriller from author and internationally acclaimed photographer, Jerry Harke has just been published and is available for sale. The publisher is Marigot Publishing House, Inc.

Harke said, "This book is something of a departure from the themes I've followed in previous books. In Episodes, the setting is on the High Plains and the year is 1978. In this book, I present the Iceman, one of the deadliest episodic serial killers in history. The killer is preying on immigrant teen-aged girls. Those who have read my second novel, On Hell's Doorstep, will recognize some of the characters and the setting, but this book stands on it's own."

Describing the plot, Harke said, "A small time criminal and prison escapee, smuggles a young Mexican girl, Selena Velago, across the border into the U.S. to sell her on the prostitution market. In the back of his truck is a stash of cocaine and heroin also destined for sale in the U.S. The girl is brutally attacked in a New Mexico bar and rescued by the owner. Together, the two women flee. The bar owner hopes to seek refuge with her estranged wealthy parents and to find the son she was forced to give up years earlier. Serious problems await them when their worlds clash with the work of the Iceman. Manny Lopez, the youngest deputy in Calvert County, is destined to learn the explosive truth behind the serial killings and the true identity of his parents. Harke Returns to St. Martin to Work on New Book

Jerry Harke, an internationally acclaimed photographer whose work has frequently included Caribbean sites and the beauty of models found on St. Martin will return to the island December 5 to continue work on a new book titled Beauty Revealed. Harke plans to publish the new book in 2010. “St. Martin is a special place for me and the charm of both the island and the people who live there has and will continue to inspire me,” Harke said.

Four well-known models from the United States will also accompany Harke to work with him beginning December 12 on St. Martin. They include Mary Riley, an actress and singer from New York City, Angela Mills, a model and student from Baltimore, Maryland, Azcra Woodward, a photographer and model who splits her time between New York City and Northern Virginia, and Valerie Whitaker, a professional model from New York City.

In previous visits to St. Martin, Jerry Harke completed work on his first book titled The Edwardian Lawn Dress: Gentle and Timeless. He also used locations and models found on St. Martin to complete a landmark book of 408 pages filled with black and white figure art. That book, which includes a special guest portfolio of work from St. Martin photographer, Jean Vallette, is called Nu Art en Noir et Blanc.

"This month's theme at the gallery focuses on smaller pieces of art that are perfect gifts for Christmas giving. Now is the right time of the year to get the best choices of art for the Christmas season. The work I have showing at the Village Plaza Gallery November was photographed in Montana and in Italy," Harke said.

Harke's work knows no limits when it comes to landscapes. "I have always been fascinated by the idea of ghost towns from the old west and one of my favorite images at the gallery in November is one I call ... simply ... Ghost Town. In the same vein as the ghost town interest, I also find old abandoned cars are so very interesting because they have stories to tell. In that vein, one of my pieces on display in November is called The End of the Road.

The third piece on exhibit in November is called Sienna Courtyard Walls. To capture this image, I got down on my back on the ground in the middle of a beautiful structure in Sienna, Italy. The picture is taken straight up toward the sky and the walls of the courtyard provide a most amazing artistic affect."

Lac Viet Galley to Show Work from JR Harke Photography

Jerry Harke of JR Harke Photography, Inc. is scheduled to exhibit nine pieces of his photo-art at a special exhibit scheduled October 24 through November 25 at Lac Viet Art Gallery located in Arlington, Virginia. Images appearing in the show from Harke's collection includre those shown here.

The month-long exhibit is a themed show dedicated to popular American model Valerie Whittaker. Whittaker, a native of Texas with homes in Northern Virginia and New York City, travels frequently throughout the United States as well as other countries posing for photographers, painters, and sculptors.

What that means for art lovers is that the trail she has blazed among artists is rich with beautiful and thought provoking art and we expect to see much of it in this show. We’ re planning to have a grand opening reception at the gallery on Saturday afternoon and evening and the public is welcome to attend. Valerie Whittaker, several of her model friends, as well as the artists whose work is appearing there will be on hand to meet attendees.”

Harke’s work with Valerie Whittaker began three years ago when he completed a series of images of her perched on rocks high above Northern Virginia’s Great Falls. “Those images were for the book I was working on that time called The Edwardian Lawn Dress: Gentle and Timeless,” said Harke. “I worked again with Valerie for images that have appeared in my second photography book titled In Sappho’s Secret Garden: A Thesaurus of Love. Other work I’ve done with Valerie included model Amber Gangi. Part of those images have already appeared in my most recent book called Nu Art en Noir et Blanc. Others will appear in my next book, scheduled for publication in 2010 called Beauty Revealed.”

Harke does commercial photography work throughout the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, but says his fine art work is all project-based. “I like to pursue themes and the results usually end up in a photographic book projecting the theme I had in mind. For example, my first book promoted a very beautiful and sensual type of dress that existed from around 1898 to about 1912 called the Edwardian lawn dress. In Sappho’s Secret Garden explored the world of sensual relationships based on the legend of Sappho who lived around 600 B.C. on a Greek island. Nu Art en Noir et Blanc was a seminal work of black and white art with 408 pages of images created in both studio settings and on landscapes from around the world.”

Landscapes from JR Harke Photography Featured at Village Plaza Gallery Show

The October 2009 show at the Fairfax Art League's Village Plaza Gallery in Fairfax, Virginia includes landscapes presented by Jerry Harke, an internationally acclaimed photographer from Northern Virginia.

"This month's theme at the gallery focuses on landscapes. I travel extensively and have shot landscapes around the world. My work shown this month at the Village Plaza Gallery comes from three distinctively different places. One piece was shot a year ago along the Amalfi Coast in Italy. My wife and I stopped at a beautiful resort along the Amalfi Coast to relax and enjoy the scenery. Perched high above the sea below, my view was framed by trees and foliage and in the center was the skyline drive that has made the Amalfi Coast famous, Harke said."

Harke's work knows no limits when it comes to landscapes. "Another of my favorite landscapes is one I call South Dakota Ranch. So often, while traveling in the western part of our nation, one sees beautiful settings right beside the highway. And that was the case when I traveled in South Dakota over two years ago. The most idyllic setting I could imagine suddenly appeared and I captured it in this image."

Coming closer to home in the metropolitain Washington, D.C. area, Harke recently spent a week writing one of his fiction novels at a resort in Virginia. Enroute to the resort, he saw the old Chapman's Mill that was burned over 10 years ago along Interstate Highway 66 west of Washington, D.C. He named the third piece, "Chapman's Mill."

New Art From JR Harke Photography Opening October 2 at Del Ray Artisans Gallery

JR Harke Photography is showing three new pieces of art in the October show at the Del Ray Artisans Gallery located at 2704 Mount Vernon Avenue, Alexandria, VA. The theme of the October show is "Arts Build Communities" and the opening reception is scheduled October 2.

"One of the pieces of art I have in this show is my favorite image of the blooming of the cherry blossoms in Washington, D.C. It features the Jefferson Memorial in the background with a perfect canopy of cherry blossoms around the focal point of the photograph," Harke said. "Another piece on exhibit this month is a beautiful shot of Mount Rushmore. I think that both the cherry blossom photo and the Mount Rushmore photo are strong indicators of how art builds communities. Both of those images have a significant history that spans across both patriotism and a sense of coming together in a community of Americans."

The third photograph being exhibited by JR Harke Photography is somewhat different. It shows a very long set of stairs that are found at one end of Georgetown in Washington, D.C. Harke explained, "Art can build communities in many ways. That set of stairs is quite famous having made it's entrance on the worldwide stage in the movie titled The Exorcist. Most people who see the image immediately identify the movie and location, both of which help build and extend a vast community of artists and moviegoers." All of the images are 16" x 20" matted and framed photographs.

An opening reception will be held at the Del Ray Artisans Nicholas A. Collasanto Center from 7-9:30 pm on Friday, October 2. Jerry Harke, along with other artists whose works on exhibit during the October show will be present to meet the public and discuss their art.

The gallery is open on Thursdays from 12 noon until 4 p.m. with the first Thursday of the month open until 9 p.m. On Fridays, the gallery is open 12 noon until 9 p.m., Saturdays 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. and Sundays 12 noon until 6 p.m. Admission is free. "TALIBAN GIRL" Comes to MOCA DC in October 2009

JR Harke Photography, Inc. will be showing art from the studio’s Itallia Collection at MOCA DC Art Gallery in Georgetown starting October 2 and ending October 31, 2009.

The theme of the show is “Potpourri: Middle East & Middle America.” Commenting on his work in the October show, Jerry Harke, owner of JR Harke Photography, Inc. and Marigot Publishing House, Inc., said, “This piece of art is called TALIBAN GIRL. The photo was shot in Italy and features an Italian model known as Sony.”

Asked about the name given to the image, Harke said, “I was shooting with Sony in a beautiful green wheat field on rolling hills east of Pisa, Italy. We found and old brick and stone structure built in the early 1900s with parts of the building destroyed in World War II. Sony brought several items she wanted to use in the photos and one item was literally a herringbone pattern table cloth with tassels around the edge.

"She sat in a broken out windowsill and playfully threw the cloth up over her head, covering part of her face and said ‘I’m the Taliban Girl.’ I thought she was joking and began to laugh at her suggestion, but soon realized we were going to achieve a very special level of art. So, I began shooting. Although most of the images from that scene were humorous, there was one that I believe captured the essence of what she was working to project better than all the rest. It is this photo that is on exhibit at MOCA DC in October.”

Dave Quammen, Executive Director at MOCA DC said, “This exhibit intends to open the various conflicts and social mores of Middle Eastern nations to the critical inspection of artists working in all forms of art, including the written word. The nations include, but are not limited to the Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Lebanon, Pakistan, Palestine and Syria. While this is the general theme for our show every October, we have also added the issue of health care bringing the event to the point of what I call a political potpourri.

'Perspectives of Women' Show Will Include Art from Sappho Collection

Ten images from Jerry Harke's Sappho Collection wil be on exhibit from Sep. 4 through Sep. 26 at Georgetown's MOCA DC Art Gallery located at 1054 31st Street in Canal Square, Georgetown, Washington, D.C.

"The theme of the September show is Perspectives of Women and I can't think of a better show to present a large part of the Sappho Collection," said Harke. The Sappho Collection is comprised of over thirty images based on and inspired by great works of art depicting the remarkable lyrist, Sappho who lived around 600 B.C. "Using classic pieces of art including paintings and statues, I worked to recreate those images through photography involving unique Greek-style settings and authentic Greek attire worn by models. All of the images from the Sappho Collection are printed on canvas and made to look ancient. Even though they are inspired by the great works of Sappho, every piece is an original work of phtographic art." Samples of some of Harke's images that will be on display are shown in this article.

Jerry Harke, novelist and photograper, will be on hand from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. Friday, August 15 at MOCA DC Art Gallery to show his books and discuss his works with the public. MOCA DC is located at 1054 31st Street, NW at Canal Square in Georgetown, Washington, DC.

Harke has published five books through Marigot Publishing House, Inc. and has three more set to be released in 2009 and 2010. His first book of photography was titled The Edwardian Lawn Dress: Gentle and Timeless. His second photographic arts book was called In Sappho's Secret Garden: A Thesaurus of Love and the third photography book was Nu Art en Noir et Blanc.

Jerry Harke is also a novelist and is the author of Lock Knot, a World War II spy thriller set in 1945, and On Hell's Doorstep, an epic of bank robbers and the Great Depression set in 1935. He is at work now writing Episodes, which he says will be published in 2010. "Episodes is a real departure for me," Harke said.

"I've always wanted to write a novel exploring the criminal mind, but I never expected my first effort in that direction would involve a serial killer. "Sappho Revisited' Exhibit Scheduled at Del Ray Art Gallery

Eight images from Jerry Harke's Sappho Collection will be on exhibit September 4 - 27 at the Del Ray Artisans Nicholas A Collasanto Center located at 2704 Mount Vernon Avenue, Alexandria, VA. The theme of the September show is "Revenge of the Sequel."

The Sappho Collection is a special grouping of some thirty images from In Sappho's Secret Garden: A Thesaurus of Love published by Marigot Publishing House, Inc., in 2007. "This collection of images was inspired by great works of art including paintings and sculptures depicting the legendary Greek lyrist, Sappho, who live around 600 BC," Harke said.

"All of the images are 12"x16" matted and framed photographs for which I posed select models I regularly work with to recreate my interpretation of the original works. They are all printed on canvas and have been prepared to appear as ancient works of art."

An opening reception will be held at the Del Ray Artisans Nicholas A. Collasanto Center from 7-9:30 pm on Friday, September 11. Jerry Harke, along with other artists whose works on exhibit during the September showm will be present to meet the public and discuss their art.

The gallery is open on Thursdays from 12 noon until 4 p.m. with the first Thursday of the month open until 9 p.m. On Fridays, the gallery is open 12 noon until 9 p.m., Saturdays 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. and Sundays 12 noon until 6 p.m. Admission is free. Handicapped access provided. Three photographs printed on canvas from Jerry Harke's Nu Art en Noir et Blanc collection went on exhibit Aug. 7 at the Village Plaza Art Gallery in Fairfax City, Virginia. All three images, sized 22"x32" are available for sale to the public and will be on exhibit through the month of August. The gallery is located in the heart of old town fairfax.

Nu Art en Noir et Blanc was recently published by Marigot Publishing House, Inc., and is now available for sale. The complete book, which totals 408 pages, or any of the individual pieces of art found in the book may be purchased by sending an inquiry to marigothouse@gmail.com.

Model URSULA Poses for Photographers at Georgetown Gallery

Standing a statuesque 5' 11", model URSULA made a special appearance for photographers and an art-loving audience Friday, Aug. 7 at Georgetown's MOCA DC Art Gallery.

URSULA's appearance there marked the opening of the August "member exhibit." Photographers from throughout the metro region were on hand to meet and talk with URSULA about her career as a model and to schedule future modeling opportunities.

Photographers were also treated to a special opportunity to photograph URSULA in high fashion attire as she modeled on a runway through the center of the gallery.

Jerry Harke of JR Harke Photography Inc., introduced URSULA to the audience. Harke said, "Ursula is one of the finest models I've had the good fortune to work with this summer and images of her, which I've named The Ursula Collection, are on exhibit in the gallery."

Dave Quammen, executive director at MOCA DC said, "We offer alot to the art community in Washington, D.C. and Ursula's appearance offers more evidence that this gallery, which prides itself on being the only gallery open to all artists all the time, is providing great artistic entertainment!"

Stephanie Anne Joins New Book: "Beauty Revealed"

Stephanie Anne is a lovely and very talented model, singer and actress from Albuquerque, NM. Since May of this year, she's been performing in the outdoor musical "TEXAS!" performed in an open air amphitheater in the middle of Palo Duro Canyon State Park, outside Canyon, TX.

That's where Jerry Harke of JR Harke Photography, Inc., found and photographed Stephanie Anne in late July, 2009 for the upcoming book to be produced and published by Harke called "Beauty Revealed." Set for publication in 2010, many of the images that will appear in "Beauty Revealed" are now being shot by Harke.

"Beauty Revealed follows earlier books titled The Edwardian Lawn Dress: Gentle and Timeless, Nu Art en Noir et Blanc, and Real Redheads au Naturel ... at Home!," Harke said. "Beauty Revealed will include a goood number of images that were not included in the previous books plus a whole host of new work created since completing those books. This is my third opportunity to work with Stephanie Anne and I look forward to putting our talents together again in many more photo shoots!"

This year's show boasts of some 2,000 artists whose work is on display on nine floors of a new office building located at 55 M Street, SE, Washington, D.C., above the Navy Yard Metro Station. Over 100,000 attendees are expected to visit Artomatic this year.

Total floor space for all exhibits covers 275,000 square feet. This is the 10th year for Artomatic, the largest show of it's type on the Eastern Seaboard. The show opens May 29 and goes through July 5. Admission is free.

First Edition of New Show, American Art Report, Now in Production

The production of American Art Report with Ursula Bass began in May with filming expected to be complete by mid-Summer. The show will be released for distribution by early Fall, 2009.

In this edition, Ursula explores the work of international photographer Jerry R. Harke and his new book titled Nu Art en Noir et Blanc.

The first of a series, this edition of American Art Report features reports from Bass on location in Chicago, Washington, D.C. and New York City.

A special guest appearance is included in an interview conducted by Bass with Veronika Kotlajic, owner of Gallery Provocateur in Chicago where Harke's art is on exhibit.

Other guest appearances include actress, singer and model Mary Riley from New York City who appears in both Harke's new book as well as an earlier book called The Edwardian Lawn Dress: Gentle and Timeless and also model Carly Erin O'Neil from New York City who is featured in Harke's book titled Real Redheads au Naturel ... at Home!

Photographer John Korb from Northern Virginia, who has served as editor of Harke's books, Russian model Katya, who now lives in Washington, D.C. and model Amber Gangi will also be making guest appearances.

The show's crew also has made a brief stop at the 10th anniversary opening of Artomatic in Washington, D.C. where Harke, along with 1,000 other artists exhibited their work.

In addition to Harke's new book, the is taking a reflective look back on the artist's earlier work including the photography books he has published and the novels he has written and published.

His first novel was titled Lock Knot. Set in 1945 during World War II, Lock Knot tells the tale of wartime international espionage, drama. and romance. It's set in New York City with scenes as far flung as Hawaii, Europe, and South America.

Harke's second book, On Hell's Doorstep, takes readers back to the days of John Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath. Set on the High Plains of the U.S., On Hell's Doorstep is a heartbreaking epic tale of bank robbers like John Dillinger, the Great Depression and an event that will live in the annals of history as Black Sunday.

American Art Report reveals previews of Harke's third novel, now in writing, with a working title of Episodes.

MOCA DC Art Gallery Executive Director Honored

David R. Quammen, Executive Director of the MOCA DC Art Gallery in Washington, DC was presented the gallery's Lifetime Achievement Award at the closing reception of the annual Erotic Art Exhibit April 3.

The gallery, located in Canal Square of Georgetown, was packed with a standing-room-only crowd. The presentation was a surprise organized by the Board of Directors of the gallery.

"There are people in our lives who do good things for the rest of us and too often, I think we take for granted the good things they do," said Cheryl Edwards, Treasurer of the Board of Directors.

Another board member, John Korb commented, "We all appreciate and admire Dave Quammen, the Executive Director of MOCA DC. He is an important part of the lives of many people in the Washington DC metropolitan area art community."

Jerry Harke, also a board member and a primary organizer of the event said, "If I were to search my mind for a word that best describes Dave Quammen, it would be the word GENTLEMAN. Dave Quammen is a gentleman in every sense of the word. He always has a gentle greeting for visitors of the gallery and he always treats everyone with the utmost respect and fairness."

The citation read during the presentation summarized the highlights of Quammen's career. He served his country in the U.S. Navy for six years and over the course of the twenty-five years following his military service, he worked in the semiconductor and computer industry out in Silicon Valley, as both a technical engineer and as a marketing professional. Not long after that, Quammen moved on up to become the owner of a printed circuit board manufacturing company.

It was 1993 when Quammen first came onto the scene in Washington DC. As a political activist, he worked to gain support for an economic development concept that would help the poor to help themselves. His days as a journalist came out of that experience and he wrote a weekly column on poverty issues that appeared in the Metro Herald over a three year period.

Quammen brought attention to his efforts on behalf of the poor through the creation of a website that received national recognition. Some of the materials available on that site were used by colleges to teach economic and social courses.

Work as a political activist was grueling with long hours and after seven years, Quammen began seeking creative outlets. He started participating in figure modeling in the year 2000 and discovered quickly that figure modeling was a disorganized world.

To correct this, he began the publication of a newsletter titled Artists & Models. In 2002, he founded the Figure Models Guild with the purpose of making the pool of models in the area more professional. He started working on that task by creating a model registry that he provides to all the schools, groups and individual artists who hire models. He also created and maintains a Figurative Arts Directory listing the places that use models.

His tireless work to organize the relationship between models and artists in the region has been a real success story and the Guild became the only recognized source of professional figure models in the DC area. Then, in 2005, he took over the MOCA DC Gallery, renovated the space, expanded the client base, and put the gallery on a sound financial footing.

He conducted innovative exhibitions and established a policy of being open to artists who have had little or no opportunity to exhibit their work in a mainstream gallery.

He remains a tireless advocate for the poor and the homeless population in the nation’s capitol and has used the gallery as a place to hold memorial services for the homeless who’ve died without anyone to pay respects to them. He feels very strongly about the plight of the poor and the homeless and last year, he used the gallery to put on a show for the homeless foundation.

The gallery has expanded into other areas of artistic expression with the same philosophy of serving the underserved. It has become a center for photographers, writers, journalists and actors. It is a facility that provides opportunity.

American photographer Jerry R. Harke has just published his new book “Nu Art en Noir et Blanc” containing more than 400 pages of black & white nudes. The first half of the book involves the presentation of studio nudes and the images in the second half were shot on location in the great outdoors. Harke says the book’s title, “Nu Art en Noir et Blanc” was chosen to honor a very special French photographer, Jean Vallette, whose work appears in a brief special guest gallery section in the center of the book. "Jean Vallette is one of the world’s finest photographers with an eye for presenting the female form as a gentle and beautiful landscape to be appreciated by all," said Harke.

Commenting on the book, Harke said, "The purpose of my work is to capture the beauty of not only what I see before me, but also what, in my mind’s eye, I think is possible. Hence, much of my work is staged with great effort and attention given to such things as lighting, mood, backdrops, and the relationship of bodies, one to the other.

The number is beyond comprehension.One thing is certain though, Keith’s thoughts are rarely organized into full sentences and they definitely don’t rhyme!

So when reading Keith’s poetry, I feel the subconscious mind at work, processing thoughts, sometimes in some sort of order - other times not. And yet, they are all genuine thoughts. They are thoughts like the kind that go through our minds as we look at the images in a book like “Nu Art en Noir et Blanc”, but couldn’t write on paper to save our souls. Keith can do it and he does it magnificently.

But wait, there's more! Each of the winners will also be awarded a one-hour make-up session with one of three top-notch professional make-up artists! MOCA DC is fortunate to have Jerry Harke of JR Harke Photography, Inc. (Annandale, VA), Mike Cary of Mike Cary Photography (Fredericksburg, VA), and John Korb from John Korb Photography (Fairfax, VA) donate two-hour photoshoots to the winners.

And, the three top notch make-up artists who are donating their services to the winners include Brie Cafferty, Valerie Whitaker and Amber Gangi.

Winners of the body painting contests will be awarded a cash prize of $50 for the best body painting artist and $50 for the best human canvas.

DETAILS: Photoshoots will be conducted at the photographer's studio and will be two hours in length, not including the one-hour make-up session.

The sessions may include as many as four costume changes. Photographers will provide the winning models DVDs with digital images sized at 8x10 inches in both high and low resolutions. DVDs will be provided to the models will full usage rights no later than two weeks following the photoshoot.

Photoshoot dates and times will be arranged between the model, photographer and make-up artist, but must take place within 90 days (no later than July 3, 2009).

Photographers and make-up artists will make every reasonable effort, consistent with their existing business commitments, to schedule a photoshoot with the model on a mutually agreed upon date as soon as possible prior to July 3, 2009.

Art Show 2009 - MOCA DC Art Gallery - 1054 31st St NW, Canal Square in Georgetown - Washington, DC

These images, created by JR Harke Photography, Inc., are on display at the MOCA DC Art Gallery March 6 - April 3.

Glamour model Angelina Leigh was on hand to pose during a special exhibition photoshoot with JR Harke Photography, Inc. before the crowded gallery.

Models from throughout the metro-politain DC area were invited to show up to network with photographers.

The show opened on March 6 at 6 pm with a gala reception with nearly 300 people attended and didn't close until the early morning hours March 7!

A feature of the evening was a model's parade in which the models in attendance had the opportunity to come to the front of the gallery, give their name and pose for John Korb Photography. This allowed the photographers in the audience to identify new models and network for future projects.

The closing of the annual Art Show will be on April 3 and during that party, there will be a special model costume contest and also a body painting contest.

The winners will receive prizes totalling over $1,000!

One of the prizes for the top three winders in the costume contest is a special 2 hour photoshoot with one of three metro DC photographers, these include JR Harke Photography, Inc., John Korb Photography, and Mike Cary Photography.

Make up artists include Amber Gangi, Brie Cafferty and Valerie Whittaker. Judges for the contest will be Will Gray of Grayscape Photography, Ron Ceasar of Ceasar Photography, and Azcra Woodward.
